A Welsh contractor is using a Dig A Crusher 700 to help fuel its diversification from earthworks and drainage work into the burgeoning demolition and recycling sector
Powys-based DA Bishop has continued its programme of ongoing diversification with the purchase of a Dig A Crusher 700 crusher bucket. The attachment, supplied by sole UK importer Dig A Crusher, now spearheads the company’s move into the fast-growing recycling market.
Third-Generation
DA Bishop is a third-generation, family-owned company that was founded in 1965 by Thomas Bishop, who started with just a single machine. The reins were passed to his son David in 1974 who subsequently handed the running of the company to his son and present managing director Matt, when he joined the company in 1985.
Describing his company as “compact”, Matt currently employs just five people and yet his company’s reputation has spread far beyond the confines of its native Powys. In fact, it’s not unusual to find Bishop machines working as far afield as Gloucester and even Hampshire.
Matt Bishop reports that one of the key challenges constantly facing his company is what to do with the arisings from an excavation contract. “One big problem on any excavation project is what to do with the excavated material. On many of our Welsh contracts, we are digging through rock and we end up with lots of material requiring disposal,” he says. “On one recent job, we excavated the foundation for a large agricultural building and ended up with 1,500 tonnes of waste rock for our efforts.”
No Specialist Carrier
The solution came in the shape of the Dig A Crusher 700 attachment. “We initially saw the Dig A Crusher in a trade magazine almost three years ago,” Bishop recalls. “We didn’t act upon it immediately but as soon as I saw a video of the machine working, I knew it was right for us.”
According to Bishop, the Dig A Crusher 700 is ideally suited to applications with material that needs processing but which aren’t large enough to justify a dedicated, track-mounted mobile crusher. “The Dig A Crusher regularly processes construction and demolition waste at a rate of 40 tonnes/hour and concrete at 30 tonnes/hour,” he says. “We didn’t need to purchase a specialist carrier for the attachment. We generally use it in conjunction with our Kobelco 200 tracked excavator which has a quick hitch fitted so we can drop off the standard bucket and process waste materials in a matter of minutes.”
“With the Dig A Crusher bucket, we can now process this material on site saving us money on vehicle movements and landfill tax, to say nothing about converting what had previously been a waste into a cash-generating product,” Matt Bishop concludes. “It’s been a pleasure working with Dig A Crusher. I’m glad we struck a deal over the bucket; it’s been one of the best purchases we have ever made.”
